If golf is your thrill, join in with this active group who play at least monthly at various courses in the Valley of the Sun. Green fees are commensurate with the local courses and sometimes special rates are offered to the group with an occasional lunch thrown in.
In 1993 Lau Kanaka no Hawai'i members, with an interest in golf, began organizing through the efforts of founder John Bishop, weekend golf outings and social gatherings with family members on an infrequent basis. Roy Higa initially set up regular tournaments of friends and relatives for Saturday play followed by after golf pupus and beer. The group rapidly grew through comradery, fun play and competition. Outings developed into weekend golf retreats with family members to Tucson and Prescott, and many great courses in Valley at discounted rates. A handicap system was established and monies collected with green fees for competitive cash prizes at an annual banquet from a point system accumulated each month.
Although many members and frequent guests have moved, passed or retired from golf, we still have an active and dedicated group of golfers. Frank and Fred Bishop (sons) of Katherine Bishop (wife) have carried John's desire to maintain the original spirit of its members and continue to organize events and monthly tournaments regularly. Players need not be members of Lau Kanaka no Hawai'i (LKNH) to join, but the club’s long-standing relationship with the Golf Club encourage donations, service and participation in LKNH’s activities.
The annual Golf Club membership fee is $35 per person. $25 goes for enrollment in the point system, $3 for the hole in one prize and $10 for the end of year prize fund. An annual point system builds with each round of play with attendance and winnings earned.
Non-members do not qualify for points, but are eligible to pay $4 for the games and drawings at each tournament. Players pay their green fees and a $7 tournament game fee on selected holes for, i.e. longest drive, closest chip, closest to the pin, and drawing prize. To join, fill out the linked membership application and send with a check to Katherine Bishop - address is on the form.
E-mail Frank at firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm your intent to play. If you signed up but must cancel please call Frank early at 480-650-7779 to leave your spot to others if we are full.
TOURNAMENTS & EVENTS
Tournaments are usually the second Saturday of each month at different golf courses throughout the Valley to accommodate East and West valley players. Members and guests are usually notified a month prior with details for registering. The email has directions, team assignments, specific play information and occasionally if lunch is included in the fee.
Start times are usually an early shotgun start. Players are usually paired with a desired partner or a closely matched handicap. Winnings are determined by the game results, point placement in handicapped flights and a final drawing of the winning ticket of all who paid and played. Occasionally, special outings at great golf courses in other cities are arranged which may include special rates at a golf resort.
